5 Benefits of Podcasting and why you should start too
While you may not become the next Joe Rogan, podcasting can still be very beneficial.
Are you ready to take your architecture and design game to the next level? Then buckle up, my friend, because I have some exciting news to share with you.
Three years ago, I launched The Creative Insider Podcast, taking inspiration from industry heavyweights like Joe Rogan and Matt D'Avella. My goal was simple: to become the go-to resource for designers worldwide, just as Rogan is for comedians.
Now, while I may not have reached that level of superstardom just yet, I've discovered some incredible benefits that come with producing a consistent, high-quality podcast. In fact, I believe that podcasting is one of the most powerful tools you can leverage to elevate your brand, raise your profile, and connect with a highly engaged audience.
Today, I'm thrilled to share with you the top five benefits of podcasting for architects and designers. These are the game-changers that can make all the difference in your career, from building your reputation to growing your network, and even sparking real change in the industry.
So, are you ready to take the leap and join the ranks of the most successful designers out there? Let's dive in and discover how podcasting can transform your career, one episode at a time.
1.Networking
When I first started podcasting, now almost 3 years ago, I have never imagined the level of access it would give me to some of the most interesting people out there.
With a simple message or email, I could reach out to PR offices, experts on LinkedIn, and others who I admired and respected, and invite them onto my show. And you know what? It works! Not only do I get to chat with these folks and pick their brains, but I also offer real value by showcasing their work to my audience.
But it's not just about access - podcasting has a unique power to build deep connections with others. When you sit down for a long-form conversation with someone, you show a level of interest and engagement that many people rarely experience in their day-to-day lives. I've had the privilege of connecting with so many amazing guests, and some have even become friends. So if you're looking for a way to break through the noise and connect with others on a deeper level, podcasting might just be the answer.
2. Learning new skills
Starting a podcast has never been easier or more affordable. However, like any new venture, there are some essential skills you'll need to learn along the way. For beginners, mastering audio and video editing is a must. Although I started with audio only, I recommend jumping straight into video podcasts on platforms like YouTube for greater visibility. Don't forget to create a strong visual brand for your podcast, which will help you with promotion and building a dedicated audience.
Beyond the technical skills, podcasting also provides an opportunity to hone your soft skills. From improving public speaking and online communication on social media, to learning about marketing and copyrighting, the possibilities for personal and professional growth are endless. You'll also learn how to approach potential guests and make them feel comfortable on your show. Don't forget to create a strong visual brand for your podcast, which will help you with promotion and building a dedicated audience.
Overall, podcasting is a fantastic way to improve your technical and soft skills, connect with fascinating people, and share your passion with the world.
3. Building your reputation
Before I started podcasting, nobody in the architecture and design field knew who I was, what I did, or what values and qualities I possessed. However, since launching my podcast, I've made it my goal to consistently release new episodes every week, while continuously improving the quality of production and inviting interesting guests who can provide valuable insights and inspiration to my audience.
Maintaining a high level of quality and frequency can be challenging, but the effort has certainly paid off. I'm constantly surprised by the positive feedback I receive from others in the industry, and I'm proud to say that my podcast has helped me establish myself as a reputable source of information and inspiration in the field of architecture and design.
4. Giving back to the architecture and design community
When I was a freshman in the architecture field, I had no idea how to navigate the industry or build a successful career. While there are plenty of traditional books, magazines, and websites focused on what different designers are doing, they often lack practical advice on how to build a profitable business or career in this field. As a result, much of the available content may seem helpful on the surface but is not always feasible for those seeking to develop their skills.
That's why I started The Creative Insider Podcast. Through interviews with established designers and architects, my podcast offers valuable information on how to build a successful and meaningful career in the industry. This podcast is particularly useful for those who don't come from a family of architects or designers and may not have access to this type of insider knowledge. By listening to the podcast, people can gain an overview of the possibilities in a creative design career and get practical tips on how to achieve success in the industry.
5. Fighting the battles that matter to you
While a podcast may not necessarily have a massive audience, it provides a platform for raising awareness about issues that matter to you. As an architecture and design professional, I have used my podcast to shed light on important issues such as exploitation in the industry and the gender inequities that exist. Despite having a niche audience, these campaigns have elicited a positive response from the community, proving that the impact of a podcast can extend far beyond its listenership.
I hope that this newsletter has inspired you to take the leap into podcasting and explore the many benefits that come with it. Remember, consistency and quality are key to building a successful podcast, and by doing so, you can create a platform that amplifies your voice and shines a light on the issues that matter to you.
So go forth, fellow architects and designers, and share your unique perspectives with the world. And when you're ready to launch your own podcast, don't forget to invite me as a guest! I can't wait to hear what you have to say.
