From Isolation to Collaboration: Networking Tips for Architects and Designer
Effective and easy strategies to find like-minded people
In today's highly competitive world, it's no secret that networking is an essential ingredient for success in any profession. But for architects and designers, the importance of networking cannot be overstated.
As an architect or designer, your professional network can open up new opportunities for collaboration, career advancement, and personal growth. The people you meet and connect with can inspire you with new ideas, offer invaluable advice, and help you navigate the complexities of the industry.
A genuine way of networking involves building meaningful relationships with like-minded individuals who share your passion for design and innovation. It's about creating a community of people who can support you in your endeavors and help you achieve your goals.
So, why is networking so important for architects and designers? Let's explore some of the many benefits:
Opportunities for collaboration: By connecting with other architects and designers, you can collaborate on projects, share ideas and insights, and learn from each other's experiences. Collaboration can help you create more innovative and impactful designs and broaden your horizons.
Career advancement: Networking can open up new job opportunities, help you establish yourself as an expert in your field, and put you in touch with potential clients and employers. By building a strong professional network, you can take your career to the next level.
Personal growth: Networking can also help you grow personally by exposing you to new ideas and perspectives, challenging your assumptions, and expanding your knowledge and skills.
Now that we've explored the benefits of networking, let's talk about how to build and maintain a strong professional network. Here are some tips to get you started:
Attend industry events: Attend conferences, seminars, and trade shows in your industry. This is a great way to meet new people, learn about the latest trends and innovations, and showcase your work.
Here's a list of 15 of the hottest events about architecture and design listed on the Dezeen events guide that you can still attend this year to connect with people:
Milan Design Week - 17 to 23 April
DesignMarch (Iceland) - 3 to 7 May
NYCxDesign - 18 to 25 May
Melbourne Design Week - 18 to 28 May
Venice Architecture Biennale - 20 May to 26 November
IMM Cologne - 4 to 7 June
3 Days of Design (Copenhagen, Denmark) - 7 to 9 June
Design Shanghai - 8 to 11 June
Design Miami/Basel - 13 to 18 June
Helsinki Design Week - 1 to 11 September
Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism - 1 September to 29 October
London Design Festival - 16 to 24 September
Design Week Mexico - October
Design Week Lagos - October
Sharjah Architecture Triennial (UAE) - November
If these events are too pricey for you to attend, my suggestion would be to research the events and trade fairs happening in your own city or area. They might not be as flashy and glamourous, but they are still a great venue to connect with local architects and designers, which might be an even better solution. Furthermore you can volunteer for the local organizations or industry associations. This is a great way to give back to your community, make a difference, and connect with other like-minded individuals for FREE.
Follow up: After meeting someone, be sure to follow up with them. Send a quick email, message them on LinkedIn, or connect on social media. This will help you stay top of mind and build a lasting relationship.
Connecting with other professionals in your industry is crucial for your growth and success as an architect or designer.
Social media networks such as LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter can be a great way to connect, share your work, and learn from others. However, free groups and communities can sometimes be cluttered and unadministered, which can be overwhelming. A great alternative is joining paid communities where you support the existence of the community and the subscription fee acts as a barrier for ungenuine people to enter. It also stimulates genuine members to actively participate as they are invested in the community. While there are many options out there, I highly recommend our group, "The REAL Insiders," which you can join for a monthly fee of just 5 Euros. By joining our community, you'll have access to live podcasts, monthly community calls, and interactions with other members. Join us today and take the first step towards building your professional network! I am leaving you the link here
