Negotiate Your Salary Like a Pro: 8 Tips to help YOU avoid exploitation and secure a higher paycheck!
This 8 points were brainstormed during the monthly call of The Creative Insider comunity on Patreon.
Hello there!
As architects and designers, we bring unique skills and expertise to our work. However, negotiating fair salaries or facing exploitation in our workplaces can be a challenge. These topics are not always easy to discuss with family and friends, which is why we want to share some valuable insights and strategies that we discussed in our recent
monthly call of “The Real Insiders” on Patreon.
Here are the top 8 learnings from our discussion:
Know your market value: Research on common websites like Glassdoor or check your Institute for Architects to understand the market value of your position. Don't be afraid to negotiate for a fair salary.
Consider the whole package: It's not all about money. Consider benefits and work-life balance as well. As we grow older, the value of free time with family and loved ones becomes more important than money.
Keep track of your record: Emphasize your unique qualifications and contributions to the company. Highlight your achievements, and ensure that your contributions to the company are recognized and rewarded.
Aim always higher: Use effective communication and collaboration during negotiations. Be prepared to compromise if your employer is unable to meet all your demands.
Ask for a defined path: If you're seeking a salary increase or a promotion, ask for a clear and comprehensive path to reach your goals. If it's not provided, then you may be at risk of being exploited.
Be aware of the signs of exploitation: Such as excessive workload and low pay or benefits. Know your position's tasks and responsibilities and deliver what is expected of you, but don't take on too much responsibility if you're not provided with a reasonable deadline or support.
Ensure that your contributions to the company are recognized and rewarded: During yearly performance reviews, ask for a record of what was discussed or follow up with an email for confirmation to avoid misunderstandings.
Connect with other creatives: Connect with other creatives and gain support through community engagement. Join our community on Patreon and participate in our monthly calls to gain insights, share experiences, and connect with other creatives.
These are not easy issues to tackle, but it's important that we have these conversations and support each other. We invite you to join The Real Insiders on Patreon and be a part of our community. In addition, we highly recommend reading "Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss (I am not sponsored to suggest it to you, it is just a cool piece of knowledge)
